Since the treatment began, our now talented son, enrolled in a work/life skills education program at JFK Hospital in Edison. He has lost 35 pounds (maintained for almost 2 years), and has dramatically reduced metals in his body. No longer is he obsessive, he has no tics, and he is much more sociable with others. He has learned new job and social skills and has just been hired to work at a nationally known food chain as a dining room associate. He now has friends, joined several social organizations, and engages in physical activity daily. Most of all, he is happy and his self confidence continues to grow.
My husband and I both strongly believe, that Dr. Dornfeld's treatment has contributed significantly to our son's success and well being. I look at him and smile often after watching him progress with these safe adjustments and treatments performed at Family Wellness Center.
"HE IS JUST GREAT NOW!"
My name is John R. (age 30) and I suffered a stroke at birth in the left side of my brain that affected the right side of my body. This left me with severe muscle atrophy and significant disabilities with the use of my entire right hand and upper extremity. I had numerous surgeries growing up. I always knew my right hand would not be as strong as my left hand. I met a great, caring physician, Dr David Dornfeld, who asked me if I ever tried Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. I didn't know if it would help me since my Stroke occurred 30 years ago.
I've been going in the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber working on my right hand and entire right upper extremity-doing numerous exercises, while in the chamber. I am very proud to say I have not only gained strength, improved my muscular atrophy, and greatly improved both my shoulder and my hand's range of motion. I am able to do more things easier with my right hand as opposed in the past, when I struggled daily because of the tightness I felt in my hand. My middle and ring finger would not be able to be straightened out completely and could not function independently prior to the mHBOT sessions. That is the only new therapy that I have done and I have been amazed on the recovery of my hand and the independence of those 2 fingers is improving daily with continued Hyperbaric Therapy and exercises while in the chamber!
I owe a lot of thanks to Dr Dornfeld for introducing me to the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber as I've seen results in the improving function of my hand in everyday activities.
I have to date accumulated 23 hours at pressure and feel very comfortable with the staff, and the care I receive at Family Wellness Center.
The results were amazing...
Dear Emily and Dr Dornfeld,
My wife and I just wanted to thank you for all your help with our son. We can't thank you enough for all that you've done to help him take control of his life.
Our son has always shown a tendency to be mildly ritualistic and has always thrived in an environment of routine. However, when he entered adolescence, his ritualistic tendencies took on a life of their own and blossomed into a severe case of OCD almost overnight. Pre-occupied with illogical fears of cleanliness that placed his twin sibling at the core of his contamination obsession it was impossible for him to live a normal
life. Schoolwork, homework were an impossibility. Driven by fears of contamination, he sequestered himself in his room from the minute he came home from school, even fun became an unpleasant chore for our son.
Desperate to find answers (and a solution) my wife and I researched and tried everything. We went to a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (CBT), we brought him to a psychiatrist, we purchased books. None of the treatments seemed to work. The CBT therapist found our son to be a challenge and my wife and I came to the conclusion that traditional CBT therapy was not appropriate for his strong-willed personality.
Just when my wife and I were at the end of our ropes, not knowing where to turn next, Dr Dornfeld referred us to Emily. Emily is amazing. Emily took the time to understand our son and spent countless hours getting to know him. Emily understood our son and took the approach that was best suited for HIM. No boring lists, or steps or long drawn out lectures on what he was doing wrong and what he needed to do to overcome his compulsions. Emily took her understanding of what made our son tick and blended it with traditional therapy and guided meditation. Emily approached the therapy in a way that made it interesting to our son. Emily didn't lecture him, she enabled him and inspired him. Emily attacked the problem on multiple fronts, making audio recordings of guided meditation for him to listen to when he wasn't with her. Our son listened to the recordings prior to going to bed.
The results were amazing. Our son was eager to go to his weekly sessions with Emily -- something he didn't do with any of the other therapists. His willingness to take on the compulsions grew stronger by the week. His self-esteem and inner-strength grew to the point where he began confronting compulsions on his own. After about 6 months of therapy, he has finally reached a point where he's conquered all of his major compulsions and is capable of living an enjoyable life. He still has mild ritualistic tendencies and habitual patterns, but, thanks to Emily, he now has the tools to take on those tendencies if and when they return. Thanks to Emily his quality of life has drastically improved.
We have our son back, and we can't thank you enough for all that you've done to make that happen. It is wonderful to see our son doing the things that used to make him happy and not being preoccupied with the illogical distractions of OCD.
Bill and Chris Farrell
Written by a mom with a six year old boy who has autism.
At two and a half, my son, Cole stopped drinking. I called everyone ...there wasn't anything on the Internet that made reference to a child that stopped drinking. I fed him a ton of baby food as a way to get fluids in him. I dribbled water from my fingers into his mouth. I gave him baths constantly and let him suck the sponges. Children's Specialized Hospital made Cole a priority due to the nature of the problem. Some people wait six months to a year for their diagnosis. We got ours in a matter of weeks. Lucky, unlucky. He was seen by feeding specialists right away and was drinking soon after.
My son ran and ran. He couldn't stop playing with light switches. Our silent boy didn't talk and there was absolutely no eye contact. He did not communicate with us or anyone physically or verbally. He didn't respond to directions. He didn't respond to his name. He wouldn't play with toys. In desperation, I'd take him on long bike rides to fill his time with "something". and to calm him when he was tantruming. He was in his own land and we needed to pull him out of that dark place.
Today "beanie boy" is six, and although we still have miles to go on our run, he is starting to answer our questions when we ask questions. ("what is it?" is in place and "who is it?" is emerging). He is starting to have spontaneous requests instead blurting the "taught" versions. He understands our directions and follows them. He is starting to read a couple of words and knows the alphabet with the sounds of each letter. Cole still has trouble playing but will pick up a book and start looking at the pictures.
But best of all, he is hugging us and looking into our eyes. Last night, while tucking him into bed, I laid down with him for a while....he was facing me, with his hand on my hair and he was smiling at me in the dark. I think I could accept my boy's' silence in exchange for this affection. The absence of affection, that eye holding yours, is "the" most cruel aspect of this disease.
I recommend a well-rounded series of treatments and therapies to enhance "a chance" at success. I believe each therapy and treatment we have given Cole has contributed to his awakening. I got my child back with the following: Biomedical, ABA therapy, (Use ABA, Applied Behavior Analysis or Dir/Floor Time), Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy and Social Skills. I'm supported in this by books, reports, professionals and parents, all of whom I've consulted. (S. Greenspan/Wieder's "Engaging Autism" and it's important to read the Lovaas Study: "Behavioral treatment and normal educational and intellectual functioning in young autistic children." Lovaas, O. I. (1987). Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, 55, 3-9.)
What we did/ are doing Biomedical: -Get a good caring Doctor well trained in DAN! protocols- That is how we found Dr Dave Dornfeld.
- Clean the gut of yeast /Fix the leaky tummy - And why not fix a tummy ache that will make your child moody and uncomfortable? I had stomach issues when I was a child and would have appreciated some attention paid to it.
- Supplements - Cole has mental challenges. I thought if I could make him physically strong, we would be working on something we COULD work on. I can't fix his brain, change his genetics, reverse the environment trigger which lead to his autism, but I do have the power to work on his physical health. Bean had difficulties motor planning (moving through space), now he participates in a hockey league and is a strong bike rider (yes, still with training wheels but I plan to take them off this year)... with OT and the biomedical supplements he can get closer to doing the physical things that typically developing kids participate in. He is having so much fun. These physical activities make us (parents) feel better too. We all try to give our children the fun we had when we were kids. It was heart breaking to me when I was faced with the fact that my son would miss out on riding a bike or pumping on a swing. Believe me, I worked hard to give him these things.
In the very boring movie they will make about me and beanie boy, I am standing in my kitchen and there is a boom shot from above. I am opening and spilling 24 capsules a day into baby food. Next frame, I am running next to his bike, bending over to show him the motor plan of braking...next frame, I am exhaling with emotion on the rink glass while watching "the bean" skate with the biggest smile I've ever seen on him.
- Chelation - We have especially seen gains with the chelation and luckily the little man is responding to the oral treatment which is easier on him and the family than the I.V. version of the treatment. My husband who is more skeptical than me in all things, agrees that Beanie has gains after every chelation cycle. My husband will sit on the floor with me and administer. We use an oral syringe followed by a cookie. Dad complains about the cost but he hasn't prevented me from buying or giving anything to Cole so he must be on board more than he is admitting.
Anyway, after every chelation cycle we've seen improvements and mostly social (eye contact, attention to others, joint attention) until now. Now I'm noticing more language. I played near a toxic river when I was a kid. The tests have revealed a high lead content in Cole's system. Could I have passed my lead levels to Cole while pregnant? Although chelation is hard on his body, I think the lead removal is far more important right now. As the tests reveal the lead and other harmful metals removed, so is the cloud that was surrounding Cole's head ... he is thinking clearer.... he is gaining awareness, he is waking and I'm witnessing it.
- Gluten free/casein free/organic food - We have a compromised immune system here. Let's treat it with care and give this little body foods it can digest. Foods that will not be poisoned with hormones and toxic pesticides. This makes a lot of sense to me. Our society is getting sick from our food, why would we expect that an autistic body could handle our polluted supply? With the casein, we saw an immediate change in C's behaviors. He was crying everyday at school and after we took dairy from his diet, he stopped. It was somewhat dramatic and obvious that he was feeling better. People I've talked to think the diets are hard but they aren't that hard after the first six months (isn't it true of any diet? It's all about "replacement " like replacing pudding with yogurt and making it habitual)...I have found "replacement" foods for everything: hummus instead of cheese, coconut ice cream is amazing ...almost better than ice cream and the best pancake mix is made by the company Namaste. Really the diet is the easiest thing to accomplish on the enormous list. Handwriting is a thousand times harder. There are ways to adjust to the new life style. For example, I bring C's coconut version of ice cream to the ice cream stand and so we all can enjoy the experience of the ice cream stand without compromising his health. I've seen kids suffering with allergies. Why not try the diet and see if that little nose clears up? that belly will feel better? It will be worth the effort if that happens, right? (see Dr. Kenneth Bock's book, Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma and Allergies.) The only thing that is hard really is that it is expensive. Only silver-lining about the expense is that it will promote better(smaller) portion control for your child.
- 5. B12 injections - J, step up, I told myself.
Getting there: 1.Talk to your sister who is a nurse or anyone else who is a nurse. They will tell you that giving a shot is no big deal 2. Time is wasting, step up 3. Read Dr. Bock's, Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma and Allergies. Go to the chapter about the life changing effects of B12. We are trying to repair a broken immune system.... it is not completely clear to me because I'm not a medical person, but I can get closer to understanding it, if I read it twice. I need to reread this chapter every once in a while to help motivate 3. Listen to your DAN doctor. Dr. Dave said it is one of the most important things and said it is a mistake to give up on this particular part of the biomedical and said that some doctors will not treat children who aren't receiving the shots and that he strongly recommends it which I'm sure is what his peers are telling him at the bio-medical conferences......soooo and thennnnnn, step up, for your child's sake. Remember I recommend a well-rounded treatment to enhance a chance at success. (If anyone would like me to demo the injections, please ask Dr. Dornfeld for my number so we can arrange it!:))
- HyperbaricOxygen Therapy - Haven't done it yet . I am doing math before falling asleep. I'm doing math when I'm driving. I'm doing the math when I'm having my coffee. I am coming up empty...... I am trying not to put this family in a financial situation that we can't climb out of.... I have planned fundraiser`s but haven't the personality to pursue. It is "the" missing item on my list and I feel the pressure of waiting too long. It could lead to great things for my little boy. I am making a mistake by not giving this to him now and I'm aware of it. I won't know if this is the biggest thing yet to his recovery. What stays with me is a testimony from the documentary, "Autism: Made in the U.S.A". A mother reports that her child gained language (wh questions) after the treatments. That documentary, plus the "Double blind placebo controlled study" done by Dan Rossignol MD et. al in 2009, intrigue me of Hyperbaric`s effects. Time's-a-wasting!
So important and must mention:
Be very sure your child is in a good ABA program. (or Floor Time program). Medically I see it like this: the work there is massaging the brain ...helping it make connections. Once some connections are made, more CAN be made...almost like a jump-started engine. At home keep your child engaged in productive activities as much as you can. Let them have their stims but limit them. When you can't engage, use educational DVDs like Sesame Street alphabet/numbers and "Your Baby can Read". Curious George is a big teacher for C. (George, the monkey, communicates non-verbally thus Cole can understand the stories and the stories are about categories, science, nature and life events) We have a lot of books here too. When he wasn't interested, I'd read them anyway, while he was running. Eventually he got interested. He is now asking for a few favorites and this week he pulled a book from the floor, got up on his bed and opened it. This, believe me, is a mile stone for us.
Please note that despite my optimism here, I am reserved as well. My limitless hope has limits. I am guarding myself against disappointment in the face of the work. I realize I cannot physically teach Cole all that I'm suppose to cover in an evening, in a week. I struggle to stay up to give him his Methyl B12 shots and sometimes fail at doing so. I experience guilt daily that I'm not doing enough. I see improvements in Cole but am also struggling with the disappointments. My biggest heart break this year is that he is missing kindergarten. I write this to let you know that there is realism here and that glossing over and telling you all the good that is going to happen to you is not fair. But and HOWEVER, my advice would be to put your head down, do what you can, expect no immediate rewards (which is counter to how our society works), and I'd also advise to forgive yourself when you can't get it all done. Every child is different. The best we can do for our kids is simply defined by the best we can do.
If I had to describe Dr. Dornfeld in a word it would be "Exceptional"
My relationship with Dr. Dornfeld began in 1988, when one of his patients, a colleague in the school system I had worked in, recommended him for severe back problems. The doctor's treatments provided the back pain relief I had been looking for. Pleased with the results and care I received, little by little I started seeing Dr. Dornfeld for other ailments. He took an interest in me and my health in general, and it wasn't long before I was going for regularly scheduled well care visits. At one particular visit, as part of a normal office examination, Dr. Dornfeld performed a sigmoidoscopy and noticed an abnormality. He referred me for a colonoscopy, which showed a blockage in my intestine. Under the care of a surgeon recommended by Dr. Dornfeld, a malignant tumor was removed from my large intestine. Further testing showed the cancer was completely confined to the tumor and no follow-up treatment was necessary. The surgeon reported that I was a lucky man to have found the tumor when I did. My thought was that I was lucky man to have found Dr. Dornfeld when I did. Had it not been for his thoughtful and thorough approach to treating his patients, my outcome would likely have been very different.
If I wasn't a devoted patient up to that point, I certainly was from then on. I continued receiving quality medical care on a regular basis. My wife had joined me as a patient. Routine office visits included blood work and a variety of tests that covered all aspects of our well being. Dr. Dornfeld recommended health care maintenance plans for us based on our age and personal needs that included vitamins and supplements for preventative care and our general good health. He encouraged a healthy diet and exercise plan to help us stay one step ahead of the game. In 2000, we started Chelation therapy. After reading materials on the benefits, and discussing the advantages with the doctor, we decided it was right for us. We continue to receive Chelation Therapy monthly at his office and share similiar fabulous results with the other very intelligent people who are interested in Preventive Medical Care.
In 2006, another life changing experience occurred when my dentist noticed swelling on the left side of my throat. Upon reporting it to Dr. Dornfeld, he recommended a specialist who determined that my Parotid Gland should be removed. There was no suspicion of cancer, but surprisingly, a biopsy of the removed gland showed a malignancy, and this time, follow-up treatment was necessary. A series of radiation and chemotherapy treatments was prescribed. Dr. Dornfeld consulted and advised throughout the entire process. He followed up during my office visits, kept in contact with the doctors providing treatment, and was continually involved in the decision making process. I relied on his expertise. I trusted him and was cautious about proceeding with any treatment unless he knew about it. When the cancer treatments ended, Dr. Dornfeld helped me get back to normal by administering Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and intravenous Vitamin C treatments. I recovered completely, have been cancer free for almost 4 years, and continue with the Vitamin C treatments to keep myself feeling strong and healthy.
After 22 years as a patient, if I had to describe Dr. Dornfeld in a word it would be "Exceptional". He's a knowledgeable doctor who provides expert care and believes in what he's doing. He is on top of the latest medical trends and his contacts include specialists who are top in their field. No matter what ailment we go to him with, he is educated on the subject, answers all our questions and helps us make healthy life style choices that keep us feeling well. He listens to us, and is truly interested. He treats my wife and me like family, excitedly sharing stories about his medical successes, and even his personal adventures and travels. He encourages us to stay active, his motto being, "Don't slow down, that's when you get old". So, at 83 years young, I'm grateful for Dr. Dornfeld's care which has enabled me to continue doing the things I love, things that keep me young and sharp like golfing, skiing and officiating football, basketball and softball, and mostly what I cherish more than anything, spending time with my family. Over the years more of my family members have started seeing Dr. Dornfeld, and have found the same quality expert care that I have. If you ask my son-in-law what the best thing about Dr. Dornfeld is, he'll jokingly tell you "He's a Jets fan!!", but we know that the best thing is that he's a one of a kind doctor, and we are blessed to have found such a giving, compassionate person to care for us.

I ... have gone from extremely ill to almost well in less than 2 months...
Dr. Dornfeld, I wanted to write to compliment you on the extraordinary health care services offered at your Family Wellness Center.
As you know, I have suffered from chronic health problems for over 15 years and, in 2007, developed a severe systemic fungal infection, including most of my digestive tract. I lost 60 pounds over the course of the infection, became unable to work. I was hospitalized 4 times in early December due to the severity of my condition, which alluded over a dozen doctors at some of the most highly regarded hospitals in NYC and NJ, while my condition grew worse daily.
Not only were you able to readily test for and confirm the suspected infection, but you also found extremely high levels of toxic metals in my system that no other doctor has ever tested for or suggested as a potential cause for my chronic health problems.
Fortunately, your center offers a wide variety of unique treatment options, all of which are helping me to recover fairly quickly. Due to the severity of my condition, I chose to take advantage of all of the following options, including:
• IV vitamin C and Alpha Lipoic Acid drips to fight the fungal infection as well as symptoms of arthritis.
• IV Chelation to remove toxic metals and improve my cardiovascular health.
• Glutathione pushes to give me increased energy.
• Hyperbaric oxygen therapy to increase oxygen throughout my cells to speed healing.
• Acupuncture to treat pain, stress, and other symptoms of the infection.
• Massage therapy for pain and stress.
• Dietary supplements (anti-fungal, antioxidants, energy, general health, etc.).
• Mainstream medication, including safe alternatives to narcotic and anti-inflammatory medications that had been previously prescribed in very high doses.
I found each of the above treatment options to be very effective as part of my overall treatment and, as a result, have gone from extremely ill to almost well in less than 2 months. Thanks to these treatments and related dietary changes, I no longer show any signs of being pre-diabetic, and my blood pressure is better than it’s ever been, without medication.
Aside from the treatments, I also want to compliment you and your staff, all of whom are extremely knowledgeable and courteous and have played such an important role in my ongoing recovery. Thanks to all of you, I expect to be able to go back to work in the next month or two.
I am, of course, extremely grateful and recommend you, your staff, and the Family Wellness Center every chance I get.
Because of you, my precious son is happier and healthier than he has ever been...
Dear Dr. Dornfeld,
I felt compelled to express on paper my heartfelt thanks for the amazing ways in which you have helped my beautiful son, Brian. We first met you in early November at a time when I was feeling desperate and overwhelmed by Brian's behavior and challenges. For the first two years of his life, I believed Brian was simply delayed in his development, as micropreemies are, but as time went on, his behavior was indicative of more than just a delay. He was ultimately diagnosed with PDD-NOS, and I was devastated.
Because of his premature birth, Brian began early intervention services at age 1 and, with the PDD diagnosis, entered an intensive preschool disabled program at age 3. It was always clear that Brian was learning and benefiting from his therapy services and school program, but his progress was painfully slow, and Brian and I were both increasingly frustrated. When Brian turned four in the fall of 2008, I celebrated another year of his life with both joy and desperation. I had hoped and prayed that by age four Brian would be more typical, more like his peers. The time had come to seek more help - more than what our pediatrician and neurologist were offering. Through a parent of another child in Brian's preschool program and Jenny McCarthy's book, Mother Warriors, I learned about the DAN! approach and eagerly made an appointment for Brian and I to meet you.
As a result of our first appointment with you, we immediately started Brian on the gluten-free casein-free diet as well as Methyl B12 and zinc supplements. I must admit that the first two weeks were extremely difficult. Brian was missing his favorite foods terribly and seemed to be going through an unpleasant withdrawal process. At times I wondered if we would be able to continue with the diet, but if there was any chance of Brian's condition improving, I was determined to give it a fair shot. Mid-way through the third week, I noticed that Brian seemed more calm, more settled. I wondered, could this really be happening?! Could we be seeing some positive results after only 2 1/2 weeks?! I was very excited and hopeful - more so than I had been in years.
It's now been nearly 3 months since Brian began the GFCF diet and supplements, and I am absolutely thrilled to be able to list for you all of the wonderful ways in which Brian has improved:
• Decreased hyperactivity
• Decreased OCD behaviors
• Increased eye contact
• Increased focus and attention
• Increased speech
• Improved sleep habits
• Improved gross motor skills
• Improved fine motor skills
• Less constipation and stomach pain
• Less crying and frustration
